How Businesses Can Evaluate New International Trading Partners

Separate the introduction from the relationship
A new trading partner is a company you might do business with, not a company you already have a contract with. An enquiry form, a supplier application, or a friendly first call is an introduction. Approval, credit, and authority to ship come later, in writing, if they come at all.
Read a trading company’s website for what it actually says. A careful site will tell you what the company is willing to discuss and what it does not do. A site that promises every product, every country, and guaranteed delivery is asking you to skip the evaluation.
Check identity and authority
Confirm the legal name, the country of organization, and the person who can bind the company. Ask whether they trade as principal — buying and selling for their own account — or only introduce parties. Both models exist. They allocate risk differently, and the contract should match the model.
If the only address is an email, treat that as a fact to resolve before any payment, not as an insult. Meridian, for example, publishes an email and an enquiry form and does not publish a street address until one is confirmed for the site.
Ask how they handle a requirement
A useful trading partner can restate your product, quantity, destination, and open questions without adding claims you did not make. They can say when they do not know. They can tell you which categories they will not discuss.
Be wary of a partner who replaces your specification with a different product, who will not name the supplier when the model requires it, or who presses for payment to a personal account.
Sanctions, payment, and records
Screen new partners and the banks or agents they ask you to pay, using the lists that apply to your business. OFAC is the central United States reference; it is not the only one if you operate elsewhere. Agree the payment path in the contract. Keep the specification, the quotation, and the written acceptance together. A trading relationship that lives only in chat messages is difficult to reconstruct when something goes wrong.
Give the relationship a small first step
Where the product allows it, a defined sample or a small first discussion is easier to evaluate than a large opening order. That is a commercial choice, not a rule. Some commodities do not move in sample size. The point is to match the size of the commitment to what you have actually verified.
